![]() ![]() Once a body grows old enough, we are all saddened by the thought of a breakup. Good Children's literature is some of the most difficult literature to write because one must challenge, engage, please, and awe a mind without resorting to archetypes or life experience. It has been my policy that the best literature for children is not a trifling thing, not a simplification of the adult or a sillier take on the world. Children are first protected from their culture-kept remote and safe-and then they are thrust incongruously into a world that they have been told is unsafe and unsavory and we expected them not to blanch. I think that the failure not only of Children's Literature as a whole, but of our very concept of children and the child's mind is that we think it a crime to challenge and confront that mind. ![]()

Kit Williams crafted a true treasure: an intricate pendant/hanging of a hare made from 18 carat gold. What a brilliant and magical book leading to an equally mysterious and magical clue! And I haven’t even started talking about the treasure itself yet. The longer clue reveals the details: on the vernal or autumnal equinox, the shadow of the “finger” of the monument would fall where the treasure was buried. Ampthill Park in Bedfordshire has a tall cross monument honoring Queen Catherine of Aragon. The solution to the puzzle, for anyone who solved it, was a sentence: “Catherine’s Long Finger Over Shadows Earth Buried Yellow Amulet Midday Points The Hour In Light Of Equinox Look You.” Although this clue was important, the solver would further have to take the first letter of each word to create “CLOSEBYAMPTHILL” which revealed the location. ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() If this book were a movie would you go see it? There are parts in the story where she makes Nora sound happy when facing situations that fans of this series will know are heartbreaking. I will not purchase any other books narrated by Carlin Greer! She seems more concerned about proper pronunciation of the words than about what emotion is required to compel listeners to follow along. How did the narrator detract from the book? Gates of Paradise by Melissa De La Cruz also is the final book in a series that follows 2 characters that overcome an sacrifice a lot for love. What other book might you compare Finale to and why? I think that performance by the narrator may be to blame for that though. ![]() While the story nicely wraps up the journey that Patch and Nora have traveled throughout the series, I was somewhat disappointed by the 2nd half of this book.
